Not ready for prime time...

This morning, we were interviewed by a CBS affiliate out of Hartford.  The reporter, Jennifer Selva, and cameraman, Dave, were terrific.  They made it very easy and comfortable.  It was the calm after the storm.  The storm being my whirling dervish attempt to clean my house the day before.  I never realized how shabby my house looked until I thought about what it would look like on TV.   The channel 3 crew had access to a part of my house (my work area) that even my closest friends haven't seen.  I crazily ran around, grabbing all sorts of dusty picture frames, old post-it notes, and Christmas wrapping paper to make my work area look more respectable and less "lived in."  Afterward my husband commented on how great it looked and how he was glad that I finally got around to cleaning it up.  Little does he realize that I just transferred everything to the guest room and the kids' rooms.  Open any closet here, and you will find yourself buried under the tons of stuff that falls out of it.

Those Amazin' Mets!

I always enjoy a public spectacle, assuming it doesn't involve me or my children, but a recent one in New York City raises an interesting question.  Former Met, Art Shamsky (part of the legendary '69 team,) was verbally harrassed by his ex-wife, Kim, on the streets of the Big Apple yesterday.  The former Mrs. Shamsky was adding fuel to the fire of her recent lawsuit filed against her ex for allegedly giving her a sexually transmitted disease during their marriage.  She claims he cheated on her with both men and women and knowingly gave her the Human Papilloma Virus which can lead to cervical cancer.  
 
This raises some interesting questions.  Should men and women be held legally responsible for transmitting an STD?  Should the fact that the Shamskys were married at the time make him more culpable?  It seems to me that intent should certainly matter.  But,  it's hard to prove that someone spreads an STD intentionally, although one could claim that with certain behavior (ie, having multiple partners), this is a likely outcome.   At the very least, I'd say his behavior was somewhat reckless.  But, I'd also say that having his wife air his dirty laundry in public is probably making him regret he was ever born.  I have to say, his wife seems a bit looney, but I kind of admire her pluck.  She feels wronged, and she's not going to sit back and let this former professional athlete get away with it.  Should he pay for giving her an STD??  Despite being a Met fan, I'd like to see that happen, although I can imagine that thousands of lawsuits would follow in the path of this one.  I like the idea of people being held accountable for their actions, but I guess that when you get involved with someone, even if you marry them, you're assuming a little bit of risk.  It makes life interesting.

OK, now that I've pulled you in with that title, I'll admit that it might be a bit misleading.  But, not entirely.  There's a new site called www.AcademicEarth.org that gives you free access to a variety of lectures given by scholars at the nation's top universities.  So, if you want to improve your mind, go peruse the offerings at this site.   Or, if you have a child in high school or college who's doing research for a paper, this site offers transcripts of the lectures.  And, yes, it's actually free!  Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, MIT and Princeton are the universities that are participating in this new venture.  You may not have had the chance to go to one of these Ivy League institutions, but now you'll be able to see what you missed! 

Scammer or busy mom?

I don't know if it's the fact that I watch too much "Law & Order" or read the NY Post every day, but I am always expecting to be the victim of some scam or crime.  Today, I was running errands, and when I got out of my car, the woman in the spot next to mine asked, "Do you have a cell phone on you?"  Immediately, I thought, "She is trying to create a diversion! I am about to be carjacked!!"  Before I answered, I locked my car and put the keys in my pocket.  I looked around and didn't see her accomplice, so I answered, "Yes."  She then said, "Would you mind calling my cell because I can't find the phone, but I know it's somewhere in my car."  Despite the fact that I often misplace my cell phone in my car, my mind was running through any potential scams that could be perpetrated with the use of a person's cell phone number.   I came up blank, so I agreed to call her cell.  Within a minute, she had her cell phone in hand.  I walked away, still wondering if I had exposed myself to a possible crime.  I then entered a store, and my cell phone rang.  I looked at the number, and it was the woman whose cell phone I had just helped locate.  I said, "Hello?" with hesitation.  She said, "Hi."  That's it.  "Hi."   I said, "Can I help you?"  She said, "Oh.  You just called my number, and I missed your call."  I then pointed out to her that I had, just one minute earlier, been asked by her to call her cell.  She said, "Oh.  I didn't recognize your number."   Chances are, she's just a busy mom losing her mind like the rest of us.  Or, it's a scam and my bank account will be empty by tomorrow.
